My advice: For yourself, Individual costs $ 3.99 a month when paid yearly; new customers who buy directly from 1Password pay $ 2.99 in the first year. With a family, Families at $ 5.99 a month when paid yearly for up to 5 people is the logical choice. Small teams pay $ 24.95 a month when paid yearly for the Teams Starter Pack, for 10 members.

Introduction1 min
With 1Password, your password is not the only key to your vault. Besides the password only you know, every account gets a 128-bit Secret Key. Together they form two layers of protection. Someone who only knows your password does not have enough to get in.
Since 2005, and long without investors1 min
1Password was started in 2005 by Dave Teare, Roustem Karimov, Sara Teare and Natalia Karimov. The company is based in Toronto. For a long time it grew on its own: only in 2019 did outside money come in for the first time, $ 200 million in a round led by Accel. In 2022 another round of $ 620 million followed.
According to its own site, 200,000 businesses use 1Password. In recent years the company has focused heavily on business customers, with products for device security, SaaS management and access for AI agents. For individuals and families, the password manager remains the core.
How the security works1 min
Your data is end-to-end encrypted, on your own device. For this 1Password uses two keys: your password, which the company never stores, and the 128-bit Secret Key. When you sign in, 1Password uses Secure Remote Password. With it, your password does not travel over the internet, so it cannot be intercepted along the way.
Watchtower warns you if a website where you have an account has been hacked, or if a password is weak or reused. You store more than just logins: addresses, credit cards, SSH keys and API tokens too.
Keep your Secret Key in a safe place, separate from your devices. You need it when you sign in on a new device, and 1Password does not store your password itself.
1Password works on macOS, iOS, Windows, Android and Linux, and in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and Safari.
Sharing without emailing passwords1 min
Much of the value lies in sharing. On every plan you can share an item securely with anyone, even someone who does not use 1Password. That way you no longer have to send a password by email or chat.
Families and the business plans go further. You create shared vaults, for example for the family or for a department, and decide who has access. In Business you handle that with role-based permissions and connect accounts to your existing sign-in system, such as Okta or Microsoft Entra ID. When someone leaves, you revoke access in one place.

From the Netherlands, the pricing page shows euros for Individual and Families. Individual then costs € 4.39 a month or € 3.65 a month when paid yearly, with a promotional price of € 2.74. Families costs € 6.99 a month or € 5.75 when paid yearly, with a promotional price of € 4.31. According to 1Password, the currency also determines the region where your data is stored.

For small teams there is the Teams Starter Pack. It costs $ 24.95 a month when paid yearly ($ 299.40 a year) or $ 29.95 a month, as a fixed price for 10 members. You can add 10 extra seats, up to a maximum of 20 members.
Business costs $ 8.99 per user per month when paid yearly, or $ 10.99 a month. You connect it with Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, OneLogin or Duo, and share vaults with role-based permissions. Every Business user gets a free Families plan for home. For Enterprise you request a quote.
If your team has 10 people or fewer, compare the Teams Starter Pack with Business. Up to 10 members, the Starter Pack is one fixed price, while Business charges per user.

Within this guide, Bitwarden is the logical comparison. Bitwarden is open source, has a free plan with unlimited passwords and devices, and you can host it yourself. Choose Bitwarden if you want a free or cheaper password manager, or want to be able to inspect the code.
