Superwhisper

Press a key, talk, let go. Superwhisper pastes the text into the app where your cursor is, whether that's your email, Slack or a code editor. Other apps do that too. What sets Superwhisper apart is a question you answer yourself: which model is listening, and where does it run?

Superwhisper is made by SuperUltra, a team of 6 people in Toronto. According to its own careers page, the company was built without investors and is profitable. It started as a Mac app. There are now versions for Windows, iOS and Android, and Linux is announced as "coming soon".

It works the same way everywhere. On Mac and Windows you start with a keyboard shortcut. On the iPhone, Superwhisper works as a custom keyboard, which needs full access. On Android it is a floating button. The transcript is edited and then pasted automatically.

This is the core of Superwhisper. There are two kinds of models: speech models that turn your voice into text, and language models that then clean up or rewrite that text.

Locally, the Whisper models run, from Tiny to Large v3 Turbo. Since 26 August 2026, all local Whisper models on the Mac are free. Pro adds more local models, such as Cohere Transcribe, Parakeet and S1-mini, a small language model that cleans up your text on your own computer.

In the cloud, Pro lets you choose from the in-house S1 models and Deepgram Nova for speech. For cleanup there are Claude, GPT-5 and Llama 3, among others. If you already have a subscription with one of those providers, you can use your own API key.

If you combine a local speech model with a local language model, no audio or text leaves your device, according to Superwhisper. That also works without internet.

A mode is a set of instructions for what happens to your text. There are built-in modes for a message, an email and notes. You can also create your own, such as a mode that turns a spoken thought into a tidy bullet list, or into business English.

Superwhisper works in more than 100 languages and can translate into English. With a custom vocabulary you teach the app names and jargon. Replacements adjust words automatically. In Pro, the app can also use the selected text or your clipboard as context.

There is more than dictation. Superwhisper records meetings and summarizes them, and it transcribes audio and video files. For developers there is an integration with coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, plus a CLI and an MCP server.

With cloud models, your audio goes to an external provider. Superwhisper says it uses those providers under zero data retention agreements, and your data is not used to train models. Your transcription history stays on your own device. Sync between Macs only carries settings, no transcripts or audio.

For businesses, Superwhisper is SOC 2 Type II certified, according to its own site. You can sign a data processing agreement and a BAA for HIPAA yourself.

One caveat: your modes and vocabulary don't sync to iOS and Windows yet. If you work on several devices, you set them up separately.

The free plan gives you unlimited dictation with the local Whisper models, a custom vocabulary and at most 2 modes. New users first get 3,000 words to try the Pro features.

Pro costs $ 8.49 per month or $ 84.99 per year. There is also a lifetime license, for a one-time $ 249.99. One license works on all your devices. Students and nonprofits get 40% off. Enterprise is priced per user, on request, with SSO and a 14-day trial.

If you buy through the App Store, you pay more because of Apple's fees, and the discounts don't apply there. You can request a refund within 30 days of your first purchase. Renewals are not refunded.

MacWhisper runs Whisper locally on your Mac, but focuses mainly on transcribing recordings and files. Superwhisper is stronger if you dictate all day in all kinds of apps and want to decide whether that happens locally or in the cloud.
